Moving house is a stressful experience. So imagine moving house using not a removals firm but your own pedal power!
Paul Hooker from Dunstable is doing just that, moving across town using just his bike and trailer. He’s already moved a ton and a half of possessions, using local cycle paths to transfer them to a local storage facility. Among the items he’s moved are three computers, four monitors and a bed-frame!
Paul is a Travel Choices champion who regularly supports the work of the Hub. The carer and blogger has two trailers; one for transporting his two small daughters and another for shopping and transporting items. Remarkably, Paul has built the trailer himself using found objects such as bed slats and old window sills.
‘Using my trailer is the cheapest possible way to move’ he says ‘It does require some planning though. I try to keep to cycle paths and think carefully about how I load and carry items. In one case I used cling-film to secure something.’
Would Paul recommend trailers to other cyclists?
‘If you are thinking of having a trailer, try before you buy’ he advises ‘Most trailers are around 1.2m wide so spatial awareness is key. You also need to ensure your bike is suitable for a trailer.’
